Why I coach parents instead of tutoring children.

Young children can’t concentrate for an hour. And once a week isn’t enough for a skill like blending to stick. I realised early on that tutoring just isn’t the right model for this age group - so I don’t do it. Instead, I coach parents to build short, regular practice into everyday life. That’s what actually moves children forward.

About your teacher

Hi - I’m Joanna.

I’ve been a Reception and Year 1 teacher for around twelve years, in both the private and state sector. I’ve led phonics in school, worked as an Assistant SENCo supporting children with learning differences, and I’m a parent myself.

The oral-first blending method in this course isn’t something I read in a book - it’s what I noticed, again and again, in the classroom. The children who were stuck on blending almost always needed the same thing: practice out loud, without letters, before anything went on the page.

Once I started showing parents how to do this at home, things moved quickly. This course exists because that conversation - the one I used to have in doorways at pick-up time - deserves more than five minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Once your child is able to carry out an adult-led activity (not necessarily of their choice) for 5-10 minutes. They also need to be able to hold a simple conversation, back and forth.
These games are suitable for children of 3 years and above.
This course is designed for late Nursery, through Reception to Year 1 children. Older children who are learning English as an additional language or who are new to phonics would also benefit from blending practice.
The video modules can be watched in an evening - they’re concise and to the point. The daily sessions with your child are short by design: five to ten minutes is enough, and fits easily into a normal family evening. The three-week plan is mapped out so you’re never wondering what to do next.
This course is made for parents, not teachers. I’ve deliberately avoided jargon - and explained it clearly when it does appear. Every activity is demonstrated on screen so you can see exactly what it looks like before you try it. If you can read this page, you can follow the course.
